In the green heart of central Serbia, Vrnjačka Banja is the country’s most visited spa — a town of landscaped parks and mineral fountains that grew from Aquae Orcinae, the Roman healing settlement built around a warm spring used since prehistory.
Aquae Orcinae, the Roman spring
The warm “Topla Voda” spring — unique in Serbia for its body-temperature mineral water — was used in prehistory and then developed by the Romans, who built the spa settlement of Aquae Orcinae here between the 1st and 4th centuries AD. When the spring was re-captured in 1924, workers uncovered a carved Roman channel and around two hundred Roman coins, spanning Augustus to Valentinian, cast in as offerings of thanks for healing. The modern spa rose in the 19th century to become Serbia’s premier resort.

Vrnjačka Banja is Serbia’s most visited spa, set around a landscaped Central Spa Park of fountains, promenades and pavilions where visitors take the waters at seven mineral springs.

Two hundred coins and a sacred spring
At the heart of the Central Park, the original carved Roman catchment of the “Rimski izvor” has been restored and sheltered, marking the spot where Romans once tossed coins into the warm water in thanks to their gods — the same spring still flowing nearly two thousand years on.
