On the sunny western slopes of the Black Forest, Badenweiler pairs a graceful modern thermal spa with one of the most complete Roman bath complexes ever found north of the Alps — nearly two thousand years of bathing culture in a single small town.
A Roman bath rediscovered
Drawn by the warm spring at the foot of the Black Forest, the Romans built a bathhouse here in the 1st century AD, expanding it over time with heated rooms, cold pools and hypocaust under-floor heating. Forgotten for centuries, the complex was rediscovered and excavated in 1784 and is today regarded as the best-preserved Roman spa north of the Alps. Since 2001 an award-winning glass roof has sheltered and showcased the ruins.
The Cassiopeia Therme
Badenweiler’s modern thermal palace offers around a thousand square metres of water surface set in landscaped spa gardens beneath the slopes of Baden Castle, from the domed warm-water hall to bubbling marble grottos and a panoramic outdoor pool.
A dedicated Roman-Irish Bath continues the ancient bathing ritual in contemporary form, fed by the same spring the legions once prized.
